There are basically 2 handrail bracket designs: the three screw (3002) and the one screw type (3003). Not only is the 3003 more stable than the 3002 due to the larger area of sheet rock compressed by the 3003, the one screw design is more appropriate for the 1 1/2″ 2×4 studs found in most walls. The distance between the upper screws of the 3002 is 1 1/12″ which doesn’t adapt well to screwing into a 1 1/2″ stud, hidden behind the sheet rock (if you haven’t found the exact center of the stud, one of the two upper screws will not find any wood to anchor to). The only advantage to the 3002 over the 3003 is it’s cheaper… and if cheaper is your only criterion, why are you reading this review.
