Decorative Starting Step Kits

A starting step is the wider first step at the base of a staircase. It creates a grander entry and often anchors a volute or turn-out newel post. The most common style is the bullnose starting step, with one or both ends rounded in a half-circle. That curved return lets balusters follow the arc for a smooth transition from the floor to the handrail on an open-sided staircase.

Each kit typically includes the solid wood tread, a flexible or curved riser, and the trim needed to finish the step. Choose Left Hand Return or Right Hand Return to match your open side. All components are unfinished solid wood, ready to stain or paint to match your flooring and other stair parts.
