Handrail Construction – This product is a multi-layer product with a top layer and one or two bottom layers. This alternating grain pattern construction helps prevent warping. See additional photos.
Key specs:
- Material: Red oak wood construction with layered joints and opposing grain directions to prevent warping.
- Dimensions: 2-5/8″ wide on top, 1-3/4″ wide on bottom, 1-5/8″ tall.
- Code compliance: Meets International Residential Code (IRC) standards for graspable handrail profiles in residential stairs.
- Design: Modern flat-bottom profile; unfinished and ready to stain, free of knots and defects.
- Joints: Our construction consists of finger joints on the top layer with finger joints on the side. Joints are typically every 4 to 6 feet.
Usage Tips: Although ready to stain, inspect for handling marks or smudges and lightly sand with 220-grit or finer paper, then wipe clean with a tack cloth before applying stain to ensure even absorption.
Construction: Handrail construction includes joints and layered sections with grains oriented against each other to counteract natural bending tendencies. Wood typically warps in one direction, so this method, common across the industry, minimizes potential issues. In addition, many species aren’t available in long single pieces and the only method to construct the handrail is with multiple layers. Also note that wood is an organic product with natural variances in shade or texture, which are inherent features rather than defects. We install and stain these same products daily with no issues.
Availability and lead times:
- Red oak: Stocked and ready for immediate shipping.
** Note on Natural Timber Variation ** Due to the slender profile and extended length (up to 16+ ft.) of our handrails, some pieces may exhibit a slight natural bow. This is an inherent characteristic of long-length timber and does not affect the structural integrity or final appearance of the product. These rails possess enough natural flexibility to easily straighten to a professional finish when secured to support posts during a standard installation.

Beautiful piece of 16ft. long red oak stair rail. I was truly impressed with how straight this piece was. The natural wood grain is beautiful and prominent on the piece.
Wen H (Verified Customer) –
Our house remodel included updating our railing. Local quotes were absurd! Times, prices and wood selections were laughable. I started to look online and found Cheap Stair Parts. My experience was unbelievable. You just don’t see this type of amazing service anywhere right now. Some parts were back ordered and they communicated this kindly and promptly. My second order was lost by FedEx who were less than helpful in the recovery of this item or with reimbursement. Being frustrated, I reached out to Cheap Stair Parts and they once again were on it. They shipped me a second 16’ rail without a hassle. They were fantastic to work with! I will definitely turn to them for my next need of their type of products. What else can I say…they are Amazing!

Great looking handrail. Solid wood. Received in excellent condition. I was looking for something a little more modern, but still comfortable to use. Love that it had the matching “S-Turn” fitting which some companies don’t offer.
