Good to know
- Volutes and turnouts need a pin-top newel. Block-top, box and flat-top newels won't work with them.
The House of Forgings 961-56 Plain Box Newel is a plain square box newel post measuring 4-1/2″ wide and 56″ tall. It features a solid outer wood construction with no veneer or laminate for Red Oak and White Oak, while all other species are hollow with a mounting block for installation.
Key specs:
- Model: 961-56.
- Dimensions: 4-1/2″ square width; 56″ height.
- Material: Red Oak and White Oak – Solid outer wood; other species hollow with mounting block.
- Design: Plain square box newel.
Usage Tips: Install using appropriate fasteners or adhesive suitable for wood, utilizing the mounting block for hollow versions. Apply your chosen stain or finish after installation, ensuring proper surface preparation. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap; avoid harsh chemicals to protect the finish.
Availability and lead times:
- Red Oak: Stocked and ready for immediate shipping.
- All other species (including exotics, custom options): Made to order with up to 4 weeks production time plus shipping; no returns or exchanges on customs.
Box Newel Post Construction
Box newel posts are crafted from multiple layers or slices of the same species of wood, assembled together to form the product. This layered construction ensures better color matching on the outer layer for a uniform finish, incorporates alternating grain patterns within the layers to prevent warping over time, and reduces costs by using multiple sections for the inner core instead of a single solid piece.
