How Do You Anchor a Metal Railing in Concrete?
The most secure way to anchor a metal railing in concrete is a floor-mounted post with a base plate, bolted down with concrete wedge anchors. Drill into the concrete with a masonry bit, set the anchors, bolt the post base down, and check that each post is plumb before you tighten everything. How to Anchor a Railing Post in Concrete
- Lay out the posts. Mark each post location and set the post base on the mark. Trace the bolt holes.
- Drill. Use a hammer drill and a masonry bit the same size as the anchor. Drill a little deeper than the anchor’s embedment depth.
- Clean the hole. Blow or vacuum out all the dust. Dust in the hole is the main reason anchors don’t hold.
- Set the anchors. Tap wedge anchors in until the nut and washer sit on the concrete, or set drop-in anchors flush.
- Mount the post. Set the post base over the anchors, check that the post is plumb in both directions, and shim if the slab isn’t level.
- Tighten. Tighten the nuts evenly, then recheck plumb. Slide on the flange cover to hide the base.
Tip: Keep anchors back from the edge of the slab or step. Drilling too close to an edge can crack the concrete.
