California Proposition 65

Metal / Powercoated Products
WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Titanium Dioxide (airborne, unbound particles of respirable size) and Methanol, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
Best Practices for Safe Handling and Modification
Your powder-coated metal products pose no risk during normal use. The Prop 65 warning is provided because modifications to the finished coating can release listed chemicals. The primary risk is airborne particles of Titanium Dioxide, which is a listed carcinogen when inhaled. To minimize your exposure when cutting, grinding, or sanding the metal or coating:
- Avoid Creating Dust: If possible, avoid grinding, sanding, or cutting the finished powder coating.
- Wear a Respirator: If cutting or grinding is necessary, always work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and wear a snug-fitting dust mask or respirator to prevent inhaling fine particles.
- Clean-Up Safely: Do not use brooms or compressed air, as this makes dust airborne. Use a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter or wet clean-up methods to safely remove any dust created.
- Personal Hygiene: Always wash your hands and face immediately after working with the product and before eating or drinking.
Wood Products
WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Wood Dust and Methanol, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
Best Practices for Safe Handling and Installation
As a finished, high-quality wood product, your newel post is safe for normal use. The Prop 65 warning is provided because modifications to the post and the nature of the materials create two potential exposure risks: wood dust and trace emissions from the cured adhesive. To be the best vendor, we recommend the following simple steps for a safer environment:
- During Installation (Cutting & Sanding): The greatest risk is wood dust, which is a listed carcinogen.
- Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated space. Always wear a snug-fitting dust mask or respirator when cutting, drilling, or sanding. Use a wet mop or a vacuum with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter for clean-up to prevent dust from becoming airborne.
- Managing Chemical Emissions (Glue Component): Your product uses high-quality wood glue. While emissions are very low, chemicals like Formaldehyde or Vinyl Acetate (from the PVA glue) can be present in minute amounts.
- When first installing the post, maintain good ventilation in the room to allow any trace emissions to dissipate. Maintain low indoor temperature and humidity, as hot and damp environments can cause more chemicals to be released from composite wood products. Wash your hands and face after handling the product or dust, and before eating or drinking.
