The 4 Types of Wood Newel Posts

There are four main types of wood newel posts: standard, landing, pin-top and stabilizer. Standard and landing newels are used in post-to-post railings, where the handrail runs between the posts. Pin-top and stabilizer newels are used in over-the-post railings, where the handrail runs over the top of the posts.

Newel Post Types at a Glance

Standard wood newel post with a square block top for a post-to-post handrail

Post-to-Post

Standard Newel Post

The most common newel. Used in post-to-post railings, where the handrail stays at one height between posts. Usually square, with a block top.

Landing wood newel post with a tall 13-inch block top for handrail height changes

Post-to-Post

Landing Newel Post

Used at mid and upper landings, where the handrail changes height. The taller block top, often 13 inches, gives room to attach both rail heights.

Pin-top wood newel post with a pin on top that holds an over-the-post handrail fitting

Over-the-Post

Pin-Top Newel Post

Used in over-the-post railings for a continuous-rail look. A small pin on top holds a handrail fitting, like a volute, turnout or starting easing with cap.

Stabilizer wood newel post supporting a long over-the-post handrail run

Over-the-Post

Stabilizer Newel Post

Adds support partway along a long over-the-post run where a fitting won’t work. Usually thicker and sturdier than a standard newel.

Post-to-Post vs. Over-the-Post

Post-to-post: the handrail runs between the newels and attaches to their sides. The newel tops show above the rail. It’s simpler to install and the most common choice in remodels.

Over-the-post: the handrail runs over the tops of the newels using fittings like goosenecks and volutes, for one continuous rail. It takes more parts and more skill, but it gives a smooth, traditional look.

How to Choose

Decide on your railing system first, post-to-post or over-the-post, because it determines which newel types you need. Then pick the style that matches your stairs. Whatever you choose, a newel is only as strong as its installation, so anchor it to the floor framing with a proper mounting kit. See How to Install a Wood Newel Post.

Newel Post FAQ

What is the most common type of newel post?

The standard newel post. It’s used in post-to-post railings, the most common setup in stair remodels.

What is the difference between a standard and a landing newel post?

A landing newel has a taller block top, often 13 inches, so the handrail can attach at two heights where the stairs meet a landing.

What is a pin-top newel post?

A newel with a small pin on top that holds an over-the-post handrail fitting, such as a volute or starting easing.

When do I need a stabilizer newel post?

On long over-the-post handrail runs that need extra support partway along, where a fitting won’t work.
