Stair Tread Buying Guide

Built to last

Our 1″ treads are solid wood, with no veneers or laminates. The top face is selected for excellent color matching and is free of defects. Only the top face is graded, which keeps our treads cost-effective for remodels and new construction. The bottom side may show defects, but it’s installed face-down where no one sees it.

RetroFit Tread Kits for carpeted stairs

Replacing carpet? RetroFit Tread Kits give you hardwood stairs without a full remodel. They’re an engineered design: a 1/8″ hardwood top layer over a stable core, only 11/16″ thick overall, so they go over your existing subtread and keep your rise and run within code. Choose red oak or white oak to match your existing floors or create a completely new look. Kits ship with the nosing already attached and a separate riser you can paint on one side or stain to match on the other.

How to measure for stair treads

Measure every step for width (wall to wall, front and back) and depth (riser face to the front of the nose), then order the next size up and cut to fit. Most stairs take an 11-1/2″ deep tread. Note any open sides, since those need a mitered return tread. See Types of Staircase Treads.

Mitered return vs. false end tread cap

Use a mitered return tread on hardwood stairs with an open rake on one side. With an open rake, you see the end of each tread instead of a slanted wall (see the image below). On carpeted stairs, use a false end tread cap instead. It gives the open side the same finished look.

Open rake vs. closed rake

On an open rake staircase, the ends of the treads are exposed, usually finished with a mitered return, and the balusters install into the treads. On a closed rake staircase, a finished wall runs along the side of the stairs at an angle, and the balusters install into the top of that wall instead of into the treads.

Stair Tread FAQ

Can I put new wood treads over my existing stairs?

Usually not with standard 1″ treads. Laying a 1″ tread on top of an existing subtread usually throws the step heights out of code. If you’re pulling up carpet, use a RetroFit Tread Kit instead. RetroFit treads are only 11/16″ thick, so your rise and run can stay within code. If you already have wood treads, remove them and replace both the treads and the risers, since the risers will almost always get damaged when the old treads come out.

Do your stair treads come finished or unfinished?

All of our stair treads ship unfinished, so you can stain them to match your existing flooring. We don’t sell prefinished treads.

What is a landing tread?

A landing tread finishes the edge of a landing: the top step of the stairs, or a step where the stair changes direction. Balconies with an overhanging edge use the same landing tread material. We sell it up to 6 feet wide, and longer runs are easy to join with a miter cut that leaves very little seam.
