Wood Handrail Buying Guide

Built to stay straight

Our wood handrails use layered construction with opposing grain. This industry-standard method counters the natural tendency of wood to warp or bow, so you get a more stable rail.

Wood species

Red oak is our best-selling species because it costs less and stains easily to match your floors. We stock red oak, white oak and poplar in most profiles. Maple, cherry, hickory, alder, walnut and more are available by custom order, milled at our partner Amish woodmill and shipped to your door. Pick the species that fits your project and we’ll take care of the rest. See Types of Wood Species on Stair Parts.

Which profile should I choose?

  • Traditional: 6010 Slim is a safe pick for most stairs, 6210 Wide for larger stairs and wide newels.
  • Modern: 6084 for a versatile all-around look, 6484 or 6284 for a bolder square or geometric rail, Rectangular for clean lines.
  • Minimalist: 6500 Skandi.
  • Along a wall: 6040 Wall Rail with wall mount brackets.

What fittings do I need?

It depends on your layout, but most staircases need three types of fittings: a starting fitting at the bottom (a volute, turnout or starting easing), goosenecks or easings wherever the rail changes height or direction, like at a landing or the top of the stairs, and a rosette or end cap where the rail meets a wall or ends. Every staircase is different, so send us a few photos and we’ll help you pick the exact fittings. You can also check out our Parts of the Stair guide for a quick description of every part.

Wood Handrail FAQ

Which handrail profile goes with my newel posts?

Pick the profile that matches your style, modern or traditional. How much it matters depends on your layout. With post-to-post, the handrail runs between the newels and attaches to their sides, so any profile works. With over-the-post, the handrail runs over the top of the newels, so pick a profile that has the over-the-post fittings you need.

Can wood handrail be bent for a curved staircase?

Yes, with bending handrail. It comes as thin laminated strips plus an outer molding layer that you bend and glue to the curve. Installation is difficult, and mistakes are costly, so we strongly suggest hiring a professional who’s experienced with bending rail. Check out our How to Bend Wooden Handrail Guide to decide whether to do it yourself or hire it out.

Do your wood handrails come finished or unfinished?

All of our wooden handrails come unfinished. We do not offer any paint or stain services and we recommend consulting a local paint store to get stain for your handrail.

Why do some handrails have an extra shipping charge?

Handrails 8 feet and shorter ship by UPS or FedEx Ground at normal rates. Handrails over 8 feet are too long for ground shipping, so they ship by freight with a long-length fee that free shipping doesn’t cover. If your stair allows it, ordering shorter lengths and joining them with a handrail fitting or a post-to-post system can save you a lot on shipping.

How deep does the rail bolt go into the handrail and fittings?

Handrail joints use a 3-1/2 in. rail bolt. About 1-3/4 in. goes into each piece: the handrail and the fitting, or the handrail and the newel post. Every handrail fitting comes with a rail bolt kit and a paper install template. For handrail-to-newel or handrail-to-wall connections, use the S-9600 Rail Bolt Kit.

Does long handrail ship in one piece?

Yes. Handrail ships as one solid piece in the length you order, and bending rail ships as one long piece with its layers together. It may arrive slightly over length, so plan to trim. Handrails over 8 ft ship by freight with a long-length fee that free shipping doesn’t cover.

How do I measure for handrail?

Measure along the slope of the stair from the top nosing to the bottom nosing, not along the floor. The rail is always longer than the floor run: a 19 ft run can need about 24 to 25 ft of rail. If you’re between sizes, order the next size up and trim.
