Wood Newel Post Buying Guide

Why buy our wood newel posts?

Our newels are built to stay straight. Wood is a natural material, and a newel made from one solid block can warp or split over time. That’s why all of our wood newels use layered construction with opposing grain patterns, the industry-standard method for preventing warping. We source high-quality wood from trusted vendors, and our newels are used by custom and production home builders across the country.

Ready to finish

Our newels ship sanded and ready to finish, free of knots and defects. Most people still give them a light final sanding to remove any smudges or debris from installation before staining or painting.

Custom species from an Amish woodmill

Need a wood species we don’t stock? We can have your newels custom-made by an Amish woodmill. Most custom orders ship within 2 to 3 weeks.

Strength and building code

A newel is only as strong as its installation. Our posts are built to industry standards, and when installed with the right mounting hardware they help your railing meet code for strength and safety. See How to Install a Wood Newel Post.

Box newel or turned newel?

Box newels are a common choice for larger or grand staircases, while turned newels suit traditional styles and average-sized stairs. That said, I always recommend shopping by style first. Many box newels come in smaller sizes that work well on average staircases too.

Wood Newel Post FAQ

How tall should a newel post be?

There’s no building code for newel post height itself. The code covers your handrail, which most codes require to be 34 to 38 inches above the front edge of the treads. The newel’s job is to anchor the railing so it stays rigid under daily use. That means its height depends on your handrail system: a pin-top newel (over-the-post) sits below the handrail, with the rail fitting attached on top, while a post-to-post newel extends above the rail.

How do I keep my newel post from wobbling?

Install it with a proper mounting kit. Our S-9403 newel mounting kit uses a lag bolt to anchor the newel tightly to the floor framing, so it stays solid enough to support the railing attached to it. Most wobbly newels were installed with just screws or glue.

Can I get a newel post in a custom wood species?

Yes. We can custom order our newel styles in other wood species through our Amish woodmill partners, and most orders ship in 2 to 3 weeks. We don’t offer custom shapes or designs.

Do your wood newel posts come finished or unfinished?

All of our wood newel posts ship unfinished, so you can stain them on site to match your flooring or treads. For stain matching, take a sample to a local paint supply store.
