What Are the Disadvantages of Stainless Steel Railing?

The main downsides of stainless steel railing are cost, fingerprints and the need for occasional cleaning. It costs more up front than wood or painted steel, shows smudges on polished surfaces, and grade 304 can get light surface staining near salt water or pools. For most outdoor railings, the upsides still win: it won’t rot, it holds up to weather, and it looks clean and modern for years. Our AXIA system comes in 304 or 316 stainless, depending on the part.

304 vs. 316 Stainless

304 stainless works well for most indoor and outdoor railings. 316 is the marine grade, the better pick near pools, salt water and the coast. AXIA parts come in 304 or 316, depending on the part.

Keeping Stainless Looking New

Wipe it down with mild soap and water and dry it now and then, more often near pools or the coast. Don’t use steel wool, which can leave rust-colored specks behind.
