Can You Paint Metal Balusters?

Yes. Clean the balusters, scuff the existing finish so paint can grip, prime with a metal primer, then spray thin coats of metal paint. Mask off the handrail, treads and walls first. For small scratches on satin black or oil rubbed bronze, skip painting and use a touch-up pen.

How to Paint Iron Balusters

  1. Clean. Wipe every baluster with mild soap and water, rinse and let them dry completely.
  2. Scuff. Lightly sand or scuff the existing powder coat with a fine scuff pad so the new paint has something to grip. Wipe off the dust.
  3. Mask. Tape off the handrail, cover the treads with drop cloths and protect nearby walls. Spray paint drifts.
  4. Prime. Use a primer made for metal, in light coats.
  5. Paint. Spray several thin coats of metal paint instead of one heavy coat, so it doesn’t run. Let each coat dry.
  6. Let it cure before anyone grabs the railing.

Paint vs. New Balusters

Painting changes the color, but a factory powder coat is tougher than spray paint. If your balusters are dated as well as the wrong color, swapping them can cost less than you think, starting under $2 a baluster. See the cost to replace balusters.
